Democracy is world’s most popular and controversial system of government. Since the turn of the 20^th century, democracy has increasingly become the norm worldwide such that even military administrations and other despotic regimes make pretensions about it. With particular respect to the African continent, in recent decades, the quest for sustainable development through constitutional representative and legitimate governance has made democracy, both desirable and challenging to the various African states and their citizenry.
