HOW TO CALCULATE GRADE POINTS AVERAGE (GPA) IN NIGERIAN POLYTECHNICS

The calculation of GPA in Nigeria polytechnics follows nearly the same procedure with that of Nigerian Universities. However Nigerian polytechnics make use of the following grading system in calculation of GPA and the awarding of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND):

Polytechnics Grading System Table:

Score (%)GradeGrade PointFinal CGPAClass Of Degrees100-80A4.003.50 – 4.00Distinction79-70AB3.503.00 – 3.49Upper Credit60-69B3.002.50 – 2.99Lower Credit59-50BC2.502.00 – 2.49Pass49-40C2.000.00 – 1.99Fail

First Semester OND1 GPA Calculation

:
Assuming you offer the following courses and obtain scores that correspond to the following grades that lead to the distribution on the tables below. then you will your GPA as follows:

Course CodeCredit UnitGradeGrade PointsQuality Points (CU X GP)Total PointsGsp 1012C2.002 x 2.004.00Gsp 1052C2.002 x 2.004.00Gsp 1112A4.002 x 4.008.00Gsp 2012AB3.502 x 3.507.00Cos 1012BC2.502 x 2.505.00Sta 1312B3.002 x 3.006.00Mth 2213C2.003 x 2.006.00Total Credit Units1544

First Semester OND1:
GPA = Total points/Total Credit Units = 44.00/15 = 2.9.
Therefore your first semester ND1 GPA = 2.9.

Second Semester OND1 GPA Calculation

:
Assuming you offer the following courses and obtain scores that correspond to the following grades that lead to the distribution on the tables below. then you will your GPA as follows:

Course CodeCredit UnitGradeGrade PointsQuality Points (CU X GP)Total PointsChm 1122A4.002 x 4.008.00Gsp 2082E0.002 x 0.000.00Gsp 1062c2.002 x 2.004.00Gsp 2022C2.002 x 2.004.00Bio 1523B3.003 x 3.009.00Phy 1962BC2.502 x 2.505.00Glg 1423C2.003 x 2.006.00Total Credit Units1636

Second Semester GPA = Total points/Total Credit Units = 36.0/16 = 2.21875= 2.25.
Therefore your second semester ND1 GPA = 2.25.

Not, to calculate your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for ND1 (first year), you add your ND1 first semester and second semester GPA and divide the result you obtain by two (2), i.e. the number of semester. This is simply finding the average.

Here it goes:
Your OND1 CGPA = (First Semester ND1 GPA + Second semester ND1 GPA) / 2 = (2.9 + 2.25) / 2.

CGPA = 5.15 / 2 = 2.575 = 2.58
The process is repeated for every semester result.

That should be all on how to calculate GPA (Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in Nigerian Polytechnics. For addition or queries, use the comment box below.

In NUC standard, our higher institutions make use of Cumulative Grade Point Averages to measure Academic Excellence. A Students Nigeria writer is going to teach you how to calculate CGPA in Nigerian Universities. It is vital that all university students, especially Freshers, study and learn how to calculate their GPA upon release of each semester’s result and to also make up the cumulative at the end of every session. Doing this will help you evaluate your academic performance from time to time and improve.

ALERT! If your school is not a university (but a polytechnic), click here to learn how yours is calculated.

CGPA Scale in Nigerian Universities

Performance in semester examinations and assessments for courses/subjects/modules are classified into letter Grades (from A, B, C, D, E, to F) which represent a range of score or marks a student can obtain. A particular grade point is assigned to these grades, see below.

Calculating Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

Every Course/subject/module carries a fixed number of Credit Units (CU). Quality points (QP) are derived from multiplying the Credit Units (CU) for a course by the Grade Point (GP) earned by the student in that course.

Eg. If in a 3 Credit Unit course, a student scores 63% which is a B with a Grade Point of 4, the Quality points for the student in that course is 3 x 4 = 12.

Grade Point Average (GPA) is derived by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester.

Eg. If in a semester, a student earned 56 quality points for 18 Credit Units, the students GPA is 56/18 = 3.11

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is derived by adding the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all semesters to date and dividing by the Total Credit Units (TCU) for all semesters to date.

Eg. If a student earns a QP of 56 for 18 CU in the first semester and earns QP of 67 for 20 CU in the second semester, His CGPA is TQP/TCU = (56 + 67) / (18 + 20) = 123/38 =3.24

Below is a detailed example of how to calculate GPA and CGPA

Over:  When one fails a course, it leads to carry over. It means the student will have to sit for that course in the following session. In most schools when you fail a course, it will affect your GPA for that semester. When you sit for the course in the following session, it will add to your workload.

Missing Script:  a missing script is a situation whereby your exam script for a particular subject was not found. It is expected that you sit for the course again. In some school such result is considered as a fresh exam and it will not have a direct effect on the semester. But some school will take it as carry over. However make sure you don’t have a carry over or a missing script because it will slow you pace in academics acceleration.

Letter Grades: They are alphabet from A to F representing grade obtained in a particular subject.

Core Course

These are courses that must be offered and passed by all students in any undergraduate programme.

Elective Course

These are course which can be registered only under the advice of the academic adviser as require courses, and must be passed by a student  in order to graduate.

Work Load

A student is normally in any one academic year allowed to register for at least 30 credits and at most 48 credits depending on your institutions. You can’t be credited more than 48 credits (or the maximum credits) at the session. Consequent to this, students carry over courses cannot be allowed to register more that approved maximum number or unit for the session. Without prejudice to the above, a graduating student may register for only the number of credit he/she requires to graduate.

Calculation of Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA)

To calculate the FCGPA, add all the CGPA and divided by the numbers of years if a student of a university has the following CGPA: 4.00, 3.85, 5.0, 4.50, then the FCGPA will be calculated as follows

FCGPA  =  4.00 + 3.85 + 5.00 + 4.50

4

=             17.35             =      4.33

4

For a University student this grade is Second Class Upper Division. (See page……… for polytechnic and College of Education) Note for Polytechnic and College of Education will be divided by two for ND and HND and by three for NCE.

Direct Entry Students

A University direct entry student is either three or four years as the case may be. Thus the calculation for FCGPA for a direct entry student will be according to the numbers of years. Example

3 years

4.00 + 3.85 + 5.00

3                 =             4.283

4 years

5.00 + 4.00 + 4.00 + 5.00

4                            =             4.50

5 things you can do if you did not secure admission this year

No comments :

Its a pity how many applicants of tertiary institutions
get
turned down every year, more painful for those applying the
second or third time, but most times things are not as they
appear for those that believe that every disappointment is a
blessing.
No one prays for failure but it look so funny when some of
us get to wakeup to the reality that the admission we seek
has slip-off our hands.
But life is not always about how many times we fall, but
how
we stand back after a fall.
Not wasting our precious time here are 5 things to do when
you loose admission into a tertiary institution as a student;
1. Evaluate your steps: most failure is a result of one wrong
step or the other. Some students loose admission because
they choose the wrong subject combination during UTME
registration, some others didn't prepare well for their
postume because they did so well in jamb. You need to
reevaluate your steps in order to prevent any of such
mistakes in the next exam. You may even consider taking a
pre-degree form having considered some factors(like you
don't want to stay at home that year), considering your
steps
will help you prepare for your pre-degree entrance exams
2.Make another plan: Having properly evaluated your steps,
you need to make another plan. for some of us it may be
getting a home tutor for some subjects that we notice
lapses, for others it maybe considering another choice
university or course and so on.
3.Start early: Procrastination is the thief of time, collar
him.”
–Charles Dickens
You need to start preparing today. Many students fail
because they intend to brush up in their area of weakness
by attending a tutorial centre, but by procrastination they
don't seem to start the tutorial until February when they
expect the instructors to perform magic. Many don't study
until countdown etc
4. Improve your skills: improving some skills like listening,
reading, communication, research and so on. Ability to
make research can help you get an idea of how various
schools rate their courses and how to prepare for their
assessments
5.Learn a vocation: most times I recommend doing this in
line with your proposed course choice e.g learning as an
apprentice in pharmaceutical shop while you prepare to
study pharmacy. I know of someone very close to me who
spent two years to get O"level result and another two
years
to gain admission in his choice course. After gaining
admission what seem strange or tough to others is what he
has mastered. His HOD even had to take him as an IT
student and staffed him later on in his own company. The
difference was that the vocation he learnt gave him an
edge
and today while some of his mates who graduated say
3years earlier than him are still struggling for work. He is
quite stable.
You don't have to give up when you fall or fail but re-
strategize and take another shot and I can bet THIS TIME
YOU WILL SUCCEED
Smile!

5 advantage of choosing a Private university and polytechnic

1 comment :

The 5 Advantage Attach to private university and
polytechnic includes
1) Fast Academic calender: getting a BSC in private
institution is less than 4 years.
The situation in public universities is quite different and 4
years programme is likely to change to 5/6 years.
The labour market needs young graduate now and private
institution produce young graduates.
2). You get your prefer course : unlike public universities, no
one will force you to study zoology or soil science or any
other course you did not apply for in jamb.
If you want to get your prefer course, I will advice you to
join private institution
3). Good Grade: private universities gives you a better
chance of graduating with a good grade and it's better to
graduate with 2nd class upper in private institution
compare to 3rd class in public universities.
4). Peaceful and safe learning environment : private
universities is the safest institution in Nigeria.
Fear of cultist attack or violence is zero.
5). You learn to dress corporate : private institution prepare
you for the corporate world unlike the public institution that
care less about your dressing.
All male student in private institution can knot tile and I
doubt if 80% of male in public universities can do the
same.
